Hatchery Operations Manager Specialist
Hello! I'm Mauricio Moreno
Hatchery Operations Manager Specialist
I'm an Oceanographer, master's in science focused on marine fish larvae technics. I've been working as a Hatchery Manager with two Seriola species for commercial production for over 10 years, more precisely, Seriola lalandi (dorsalis) and Seriola rivoliana. I've had the fortune to be Pioner in the establishment of hatchery technologies and processes for these awesome species with a huge potential to help feeding the world.
I was part of the founding team of the first whole cycle and commercial finfish aquaculture hatcheries in Mexico and one of the first Hiramasa, Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola lalandi / dorsalis) hatcheries in the world with outstanding survival rates, all the way from spawn to juvenile offshore stocking. Now I’m part of Kampachi Farms Mexico, a great team taking this amazing fish (Seriola rivoliana) to another level in the world of high value finish mariculture.
I Love Fish! I think they are wonderful creatures, so benevolent with humankind, I try to understand their needs and requirements in order accomplish a healthy and sustainable production. In my point of view “A happy fish is a healthy fish! Something I strive for and the main reason I love choosing this job. I have a master’s degree in science focused to Marine Aquaculture at GIA (ULPGC), in Gran Canaria, Spain. My research and technical skills were focused on the technical improvement for marine hatchery and husbandry protocols. I worked as technician at the mesocosm facility where I learned how to work directly with finfish production, from broodstock, egg and larvae management, live prey production, fish nutrition, fish health, fish transportation, genetics and pathology for commercial purposes.
I ́m a big fan and advocate when it comes to marine aquaculture. For some time prior to my master’s, I enjoyed working with shrimp aquaculture (L. vannamei) but lately as marine fish hatchery manager I have found my passion, I specially feel excited working all the way from larvae to big fish (broodstock management and spawning induction), live pray and particularly training of young technicians to get them to achieve the highest production standards and quality.I have worked with different marine fish species such as Seriola lalandi / dorsalis (hiramasa), Seriola dumerili (amberjack), Seriola rivoliana (kampachi), Sparus aurata, Dicentrarchus labrax, Pagrus pagrus and Argyrosomus regius in different areas and husbandry procedures. My professional goal is to keep improving marine fish production as a worldwide reference for quality and fish welfare.
